The archeological museum
The archeological museum of Limnos opened in 1961. It is a three-storey building
located on the Romeikos shore, near the high school. It includes the finds of
the Italian Archaeological School in Poliochni,Kaviria and Hefestia, finds excavated
in Myrina and other diverse finds from all over
the island. The objects are exhibited in chronological order, following the
island's history. The visitor enters directly in to the ground floor chamber
where prehistoric Limnos is on exhibit. There are many things to marvel at:
Finds from Poliochni, known as
Mauri up to the Ionian period, a variety of artefacts from Myrina from the early
Copper Age, objects from the early ages when the island was settled, samples
of pottery from Koukonissi, and many others. The museum's The archaeological
museum marbles are also exhibited in the same room.
Statues, engravings, marble columns from Limnos and Imvros can all be admired,
but the most striking is the famous copy of Love, a work by the sculptor Lyssipou.
On the second floor, visitors are introduced to the Limnos of the eighth, seventh
and sixth centuries BC. The visit takes off from Kaviria, the site of marvellous
finds, to Hefestia with its striking marble tombs surrounded by offerings to
the great goddess and statues
depicting the gods of the underworld.
Visitors are then led to Myrina, where they can marvel at the finds from the
temple of Artemis, mainly the sacrificial bull. The Myrina of the eighth century
BC and more ancient times is there. Some of the most important objects on exhibit
are the clay female musicians playing guitar, the flute player from Kaviria,
an engraved marble plaque depicting the god Apollo and many others. The following
chamber includes finds from the Hellenistic period, pottery artefacts excavated
from Hefestia and Myrina. The same room contains finds from Romeikos Limnos.
In a specially-ventilated and secured room, the most prized metal objects can
be seen, such as jewellery, tools and coins. All exhibited objects at the museum
are complemented with written information, slides, maps, plans and photographs
of the excavations.
Byzantine Museum
It is a fact that each place in our country has its own historic heritage. Limnos,
this remote, historic and sensitive corner of our country, flooded with the
culture of the Pontos and honored by the best laurels of our history, it has
historic and spiritual heritage and natural beauty to boast to it's visitors.
The Byzantine Museum of the Limnos Cathedral is a small contribution to our
country. It is a small window to the past of our precious native island. It
is a respectful look and a loving caress to the remnants saved from our parents'
treasures. It is the spread of a golden chain which connects us to those who
in their churches and other constructions kept alive the Greek-Christian spirit.
Our museum is the embodiment of all these feelings. All the items on exhibit
have been gathered exclusively from limnos and belong to the Byzantine Museum
in he building of the Limnos Cathedral, they have been gathered with pain and
tears. Some of the religious items on exhibit are:
1)17 Sacred vestments, 2) 81 Old ritualistic books, 3) 162 Sacred Byzantine
icons, 4) 106 Sacred church items. All of these are works of art produced by
our fathers and worth our respect. Our wish is that one day other religious
artifacts lost on our island will be found and saved in our museum.
But with the already existing pieces and our love for Limnos, we will remain
the keepers of our fathers' heritage, the guardians of Hellenism and the advocates
of peace and love.
The Archbishop of Lemnos lerotheos.
